Backyard Babies - People Like People Like People Like Us
This is difficult. I was very very nervous when I heard the Backyard bambinos were about to release their new album. Dregen, Nicke and co. are amongst my top 5 of favo bands ever, so that's the kinda 'nervous-level' I'm talking about. Abacus signed the babies and finally their albums should hit the stores everywhere! The mix of glampunk, rock 'n roll and hardrock that has become their trademark on albums like 'Diesel and power', 'Total 13', 'Making enemies is good' and 'Stockholm syndrome' has lost it's razorsharp edge. To make a long story short: People like, people like, people like us sounds a bit to 'clean'. Touring with Social Distortion definitely got the band even more fans worldwide and I began to wonder if a certain Mike Ness influence would appear in their new stuff.
Nope!
Don't get me wrong, this album has many highlights. There's some punkier sing-a-long songs like 'Dysfunctional professional', 'I got spades' and 'Blitzkrieg loveshock', but on the other hand the band managed to write some songs I wouldn't expect hearing from them, 'Cockblocker blues', a bluesy hardrock track written by a dirty mind, 'Roads' and 'Things to do before we die'. Best song on this album is their first single 'The mess Age (how could I be so wrong)', awesome chorus!
So, this is NOT their best album, but on the other hand it's still way much better than 90% of all the glampunk stuff out there AND the band still kicks major ass on stage. In the 'who made the best new album in 2006' competition between Backyard babies and their Swedish nemesis Hardcore Superstar, The superstars are undefeated! Be warned!
Score: 84/100
