Russ Rankin is a busy man, after touring half of the world with Only Crime, he managed to focus on Good Riddance again. One thing that I noticed whilst listening to ‘My republic’ is that Mr. Rankin’s voice sounds more melodic than ever and the overall sound is very, very catchy. I’m a big fan of the hardcore influences Good Riddance often uses and it’s the mix of Californian punkrock and old-school that makes the band special.
On this new album the hardcore influences are kept to a minimum, but still the band sounds tight as hell. If the band plays it’s cards right they could even score a big hit with ‘Boise’.
What a song!! Blew me away!
Songs like ‘Broken’, ‘Texas’ and ‘Shame’ are typical punky Good Riddance songs, while ‘Tell me why’ has a great Social D. kinda opening riff. The harder songs like ‘Torches and tragedies’ and ‘Up to you’ show the bands love for 80’s Hardcore/punk…no wonder since the band’s been around for ages and it’s no secret they share a common love for that old-school sound. I’m thinking Bad Religion on numerous songs as well…yup, Bad Religion definitely comes to mind. Anyways…gotta let this album grow, give it time and you’ll find out this is their best album since ‘Operation Phoenix’. Thumbs up!!!Score: 89/100
