Bouncing Souls - The Gold Record
Can’t say I was excited to listen to the new Bouncing Souls record. The hideous artwork is back again! Haha! I don’t know if it’s meant to be like this, but time and time again the band delivers the ugliest artwork ever. Anyways, I wasn’t really impressed with ‘Anchors aweigh’, of course some of the songs were great, but the album started to bore me after 4 songs. I still consider ‘How I spent my summer vacation’ their masterpiece. ‘The gold record’ made me forget all about ‘Anchors aweigh’. I’ll tell you why!
Everything sounds so damn recognisable, there’s nothing unique, nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary to this record, but it makes you wanna sing-a-long from the very start.
Bouncing souls have that certain something that makes them burst out some many fantastic, simple songs that make you smile and forget all about the petty, daily problems.
Best songs are ‘The gold record’, ‘Sounds of the city’ (an ode to their hometown New Jersey), Sarah Saturday (made me think of Murphy’s law’s ‘Vicky Crown’) and ‘Lean on Sheena’.
The first part of the record is truly worth it’s name, but I can’t give a perfect score…the second part isn’t as tight and hasn’t got the same ‘wow’ effect on me. Or…maybe I just gotta listen some more…
Bouncing souls on a rainy day…the perfect medicine for your depression!
Score: 87/100
