Rawberries - A ticket to the unknown
Hmm…I’d better be careful to choose my words, lot’s of Rawberries fans on this board…
‘A ticket to the unknown’ is the band’s first full-cd and was produced by Menno Bakker at Bunt’s studio.
Let’s start this one with ‘No more’… cool intro, luv the acoustic intermezzo’s and a great chorus, got me singing ‘Never gonna be a fuckin’ idiot…’ almost immediately. But…the main guitarriff got me thinking of a Heartaches song and so does ‘Freedom or destruction’ to be honest. ‘Midnight ride’ better be an ode to Agnostic Front, cuz that riff is the exact same as AF’s ‘The Eliminator’. I mean every band uses riffs that have been done a thousand times before but … this is played in the exact same way!
Everything sounds pretty tight but I’ve heard this before and to be honest I’ve heard it better…’Déja vu’ is a good song, but got me thinking of The GC5’s ‘Bars to me’… Rawberries definitely know the drill and Jens & Jeroen on guitar and Dick on bass are great musicians but they can do so much better.
There’s a huge potential in this band but they have to look for a sound of their own. I’d use more acoustic stuff, add some rock ‘n roll and glam, slow down the tempo, use less words in the songs and work towards a kick-ass chorus… and off you go. But maybe I’m just sick and tired of the whole Rancid/The Bastards/Heartaches/GC5 streetpunk sound….I don’t want to come of as an asshole here and I know being in a band is difficult and a hard job but I have to make an honest review. Support Rawberries and buy ‘A ticket to the unknown’ if you’re into a cool ‘new’ Dutch streetpunk band. Remember this is just one man’s opinion. I got a lot of respect for Rawberries. Keep it up guys!
Score: 78/100
