Love equals death - Nightmerica
Love equals death: Nightmerica
Holy shit! 2006 is starting to become one of the best years in punkrock to date…albums of Good Riddance, Ignite, Rise against and numerous others are top notch and then there’s Love Equals death!
This Fat wreck band got signed by Fat Mike after one of their explosive gigs and delivers ‘Nightmerica’ to the world. Every now and then a new band gives you that special feeling and you become a fan even though nobody likes 'em ;).
I can easily imagine people calling this band unoriginal or to much focused on today’s ‘horrorpunk image’ (they kinda have that image in their artwork…). Give the whole album a good listen and you’ll change your mind as I have.
I don’t know any other band making this mix. Pure old-school hardcore punk in the vein of Good Riddance and old-AFI in ‘Bombs over Brooklyn’, ‘The Broadcast’ and ‘Caught in trap’ are mixed with slower, kinda rockabilly influenced tunes in ‘Lottery’ and the amazing ‘Pray for me’(they shot a video for that one-check their myspace site!). The slower stuff made me think of some of my favo bands like Tiger army, Dead 50’s etc.
The ballad ‘Truth has failed’ lifts this cd to a climax and I’m left stunned wanting to hear more and more of this band...
Love equals death isn’t gonna change the scene with an original sound, but in a punkrock world where it’s uncool to create a good melody and it’s cool to stay away from a recognisable sound (emo/screamo anyone?) it just feels so good there are still bands like Love equals death doing their own thing and making this kid happy!
I’ve found a new love, don’t care what people say! This is gonna score big in my end-of-the-year list!!
Score: 94/100
